Interview with Artist of the Week: The Story Changes
Location: Dayton, OH
Find Them On: Official, Facebook, Twitter, Purevolume
Can you please state your name and role in The Story Changes?
My name is Mark and I sing and play guitar in the band. My bandmate Chris, or
“Poppy” as we’ve nicknamed him plays the drums.
How did you come up with the band name?
We pulled our name from a line in an early song I had called “the War”. My friend Kevin Knight suggested using the name.
How did the band get started?
We both were involved in some other bands early on in our hometown of Dayton, OH. We both worked hard in each of our previous projects and struck up a friendship early on. I actually filled in for a show or two on bass in Poppy’s old band. Eventually, we found ourselves making music together as The Story Changes and have been touring pretty heavily and releasing music together for a few years now.
How would you describe your sound?
I think it’s equal parts punk, alternative, and indie, but in the end it’s rock and roll.
Can you tell us more about your new EP, This Is Your Moment?
We’re really excited about how the new EP turned out! It’s three new songs and a cover of Nirvana’s “Breed”. In addition to it being available digitally, it’s also our first release on vinyl. We’re both huge record collecting nerds and are stoked on it being released on vinyl.
What was the writing process like for the new EP?
We had been on and off the road pretty heavily supporting our last year. When we finally got a little bit of downtime, we buckled down and finished up writing a few ideas that we had been working on for a while during all the touring. We had a lot of fun in the studio tracking in our hometown this time around.
Do you have any shows coming up?
We have a short run of dates through the Midwest and Eastern U.S., but are
spending the bulk of our time focused on writing a new full length for most of November and December.
What sets The Story Changes apart from other bands?
We’re a two piece band with a slightly different approach to our live show. It’s a different vibe all around than most bands in this genre. Come see for yourself!
What made you want to get into music?
Faith No More was my first favorite band and got me into buying music and branching out into discovering what I liked and didn’t like. Nirvana was the first band that made me want to be in a band.
If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?
I would love to tour with Jawbreaker. I’m a huge fan and never got to see them perform live.
Who are some of your musical influences?
I’m a big fan of late 90’s alternative and punk rock. We both listen to a lot of different things, but some collective favorites are the Descendents, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Braid.
Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for within the next year?
More tour dates will be posted soon, but more importantly, we’re hoping to have a new album out in the early part of 2012. We couldn’t be more excited at how the songs are turning out so far.
Thanks for your time! Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans?
Thanks so much for your continued support! We can’t express to you enough how much it means to us. Keep in touch at www.facebook.com/theStoryChanges or www.theStoryChanges.com.
