Explosions In The Sky’s The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place like many other music fans, was a huge gateway for my music tastes into the world of post-rock / ambient / shoe gaze (i.e. the good boring stuff). This band really brings it all to the table through an entire album. They building mountains of twinkling guitar swells and melodic picking, then set a sweeping fire to the scene with a dramatic crescendo of aggressive droning and drums that march towards the songs unravel. The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place will have your mind memorize all of the timing between the notes and picking apart each instrument to focus on. This album is perfect mix to either give full listening attention too or just for background music while your focus is elsewhere, motivating you heedlessly.
After I was hooked with this album, playing it through and through, I wanted to get a close friend with similar musical tastes into this record as well. At first it didn’t work, played it a few times, not even a brief mention or ask of what was playing. Then after a show and late night of hanging out in Pittsburgh, I decided to put this album on during the drive home as it helped me concentrate on the road. The opening track takes a little bit to build into the groove, and for some reason that night; the drive timed out perfectly. We drove through and out of the Fort Pitt Tunnels opening up to an immaculate view of Pittsburgh’s skyline all lit up and glowing against a black night sky. My friend looked over and wide eyes and demanded to know what this album was, he was captivated by everything that was going on, and it was refreshing to see someone get excited about music again. At that point, I really understood the importance of personal environment and surroundings that are involved into listening to music. This really propelled me to take a step into the world of soundtracks / scores as I wanted to give people that compelling moment and feeling they got during a certain scene in a film when their attention sparks up.
